As the days are getting shorter, the biting winds are in full blow and the colder months are creeping upon us, it’s time to start thinking about ways to prevent all kinds of winter blues.

The intensity of these frigid and gloomy months have a troublesome way of throwing our bodies out of balance, both mentally and physically.

As our energy balance (Qi) is thrown off, our bodies become more susceptible to catching unwanted sicknesses, ranging from the winter cold, to the flu, chest infections and even COVID 19.

In addition, the bitterness of the cold tends to stiffen our joints, causing our bodies to slow down, including the process of healing. Not only does this increase any existing arthritis pains, but also prolongs any healing that our bodies are working in overdrive to promote.

The best thing you can do for your mental and physical wellbeing is to practice self-care.

Our recommendations for practicing self-care are;

- Getting regular acupuncture can help towards prevention of seasonal struggles.

- Drinking lots of decaffeinated/ herbal /loose leaf teas.

- Prioritizing getting plenty of sleep.

- Eating our favourite nutritious foods and ensuring meals are well-balanced.

- Practicing mindfulness and meditation.

- Staying active as much as possible.

- Most importantly.. Drink lots and lots of warm water!

If you have any questions or inquiries, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by messaging us here on Facebook, emailing us at mingchenclinics@gmail.com or by calling our phone numbers at 0131 554 7888 or 0131 554 0808.

May 2022 Update

It may be a late spring but it is here nonetheless and hopefully here to stay! Let us be kind to one another as we would wish the seasons to be kind to us.

We would kindly ask everyone to adhere to our face-mask policy within our premises which will continue to be in place until further notice.

The health & wellbeing of our clients and staff remains our first priority, therefore we will still be implementing policies that suit the needs of our clinic, similar to other medical & healthcare settings such as hospitals and GPs, regardless of restrictions lifting for many businesses in Scotland.

We thank you for your understanding.

All the best,

All of us at the Ming Chen Clinics

December Update

21st December 2020

Dear All,

Further to the latest announcement from the Scottish Government, it has been confirmed that the clinic will remain open until Christmas Eve within current guidance. However, as we are a close contact business, we must close from 26th December 2020 to at least Monday 18th January as the whole country enters into Tier 4 restrictions. We will continue to review the guidance from the Scottish Government and work on our plans for re-opening after the Christmas break. If you have an appointment during our closure please know that we will be contacting you to reschedule. We will update all our clients and staff as soon as we have further information.

We understand that you might find it frustrating and concerning over the latest news and its impact on your plans over the Christmas period. However, the health and wellbeing of our staff and our clients remains our first priority. We would like to remind everyone to look after yourself and your family in these worrying and uncertain times, whether you have been directly affected by the virus or are struggling to cope with the restrictions, it is important to look after yourself both physically and mentally. If you are looking for practical advice or support, please visit www.clearyourhead.scot as recommended by the Scottish Government website.

During the period of closure, should you need to report a positive Covid-19 test result in relation to yourself or if you have been in contact with someone who was diagnosed positive, please contact Ming or Lissa directly by phone or via clinic email: mingchenclinic@gmail.com.

We would like to thank you all for your continued support during this difficult time as well as wishing you all a very happy festive holiday and we look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Best wishes,

Ming, Ran and all the staff at Ming Chen Clinics

Ming’s Training Course in China

Ming has just returned from a training course in China, studying the art of Hara Diagnosis (Abdominal Palpation), a style of acupuncture originating in China in the age of the Yellow Emperor, and developed more recently by the Japanese, particularly Kiiko Matsumoso. The Hara is the area in the centre of the abdomen, core to our energy and health. Hara Diagnosis concentrates on this area to treat a multitude of health problems, maintaining the principles of diagnosis, treatment, assessment, and paying particular attention to symptomatic history as well as present symptoms.

So how can acupuncture help?

“Researchers from the General Hospital of People's Liberation Army (Beijing) compared two types of acupuncture for the treatment of infranuclear facial paralysis affecting the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). One treatment protocol achieved a 98% total effective rate and the other acupuncture protocol achieved a 90.7% total effective rate.”

“Scientists now posit that Bell’s Palsy involves neurodegeneration of neurons due to ischemia and edema, although many cases are not ascribed a known etiology. The researchers note… …how acupuncture restores normal movement to facial muscles for patients with Bell’s Palsy and other forms of infranuclear facial paralysis… Electroacupuncture has the ability to upregulate nerve growth factor, thereby restoring neurons.”

“In a related two week investigation, Third People’s Hospital (Chongqing) researchers (Wang et al.) conclude that acupuncture plus infrared heat therapy combined with medications significantly improves positive patient outcome rates for patients with facial paralysis. Patients receiving only medications had a 60.42% total effective rate. The addition of acupuncture and infrared therapy increased the effective rate to 91.67%”

January Highlights

National Obesity Awareness Week

National Obesity Awareness Week starts on the second Monday of January each year and runs for the full week. This year’s event begins on the 14th through to the 20th. Join us now to celebrate the National Obesity Awareness Week. Make your New Year's resolution, let us all get healthier in 2019.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), acupuncture, herbs,  healthy diet, excercise such as Tai-chi, and meditation are often used to aid weight loss. TCM sees and treats your body, mind and emotions as a whole system and it views weight problems as the symptoms of a greater health problem. TCM deals with the underlying body condition that may have led to the excess weight. Weight problems are usually caused by energy, or Qi (pronounced chee)deficiency and an imbalance in the function of the organs. The typical symptoms of the Qi deficiency and imbalance include feeling bloated, sluggish, irregular bowel movements, low energy, sugar craving or food intolerance and weight gain. By restoring the body’s balance,  we will have an abundant supply of qi flowing freely through the body, and our internal organs and systems can function properly to keep us healthy. An improved metabolism will process food properly.

Acupuncture has been proven to be very effective in reducing  excess weight and maintaining it. By restoring your inner balance, regulating the endocrine function, reducing appetite, increasing defaecation and increasing overall energy and vitality.

Chinese herbal tea for weight loss has also been widely used and proven to be effective. Research suggests that the polyphenols from oolong tea, green tea, black tea or pu-erh tea help to increase weight loss and fat burn, even in the presence of a high sugar diet. One type of these polyphenols, called catechins, may help to prevent your metabolism from slowing down as you lose weight. There are also some Chinese herbs which can help to increase metabolism, and to suppress the appetite to aid weight loss.

This week is International Stress Awareness Week!

Stress affects us all in one way or another, and at Chinese Medicine and Healthcare we hope to be able to help you deal with this problem on an everyday basis.

Stress can be simply defined as an emotional or environmental stimulant that evokes what is known as the “fight or flight” response in the body. It may lead to mental and physical illnesses such as depression, insomnia, digestive disorders, ulcers, muscular pain, impotence and menstrual dysfunction among many other debilitating states. This has an effect on the balance of the metabolism and hormonal systems, altering, for example, the release of cortisal adrenaline and neurotransmitters such as endorphins.

A certain amount of stress is actually beneficial in order to stimulate our creative energies - some people even thrive on it! Others, however, do not, and too much stress over too long a period of time is invariably detrimental to our health.

Chinese medicine acknowledges that each of us reacts to stress in different ways, according to our constitution. Some of us find it affects our sleep whilst others may become irritable or have a propensity to high blood pressure. We tailor our therapies to the individual, making sure that you find the right way to relax and rebalance.

October Highlights

This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Our hearts were saddened by the news of the tragic death of the courageous BBC presenter Rachael Bland last month; so many people were touched by her positive outlook on living a full life with cancer.

Did you know some facts about Breast Cancer?

  •  It is the most common cancer in the UK

  • One person is diagnosed every 10 minutes.

  •  1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

  • This Breast Cancer Awareness Month around 5,000 people will be diagnosed.

How can we get involved?

Although the survival rate for Breast Cancer has increased over the years, we all know that physical treatment is only half the story. Cancer patients need extra support for their emotional well-being, especially in coping with anxiety, depression and their constant fear that the cancer will return. A Breast Cancer Care survey found 1 in 4 women (26%) found the end of treatment the hardest part of breast cancer and only 1 in 10 (10%) said they felt positive and ready to move on when they were discharged from hospital treatment. More than half (53%) struggled with anxiety at the end of treatment and nearly a third (31%) with depression.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) apply a more personalised approach towards cancer patients during their treatment and numerous research projects conducted have shown that Acupuncture and TCM can relieve some symptoms of cancer, such as pain, fatigue and hot flushes; relieve some side-effects of conventional treatments like nausea and vomiting; reduce the anxiety and stress and help the patient feel more balanced and with improved well-being,
